Ballet/Pre-pointe ballet shoes for a ten year old

Question
My daughter has started pre-pointe lessons. She has been learning ballet for
two/three years and loves it. Obviously she wants the shoes, but I am worried
about the effect of such a class on young growing feet. I would be grateful for
advice.

Answer
When taught properly, a child's feet should be prepared for pointe class by the time their technique progresses to that point.  In the Vaganova syllabus, girls as young as nine years old are put into pointe shoes, but don't do anything but releves at the barre for a full year.  If your daughter's teacher believes she is ready, then she will most likely be okay.  However, a good pointe class should consist of very simple steps that build up the strength in the feet.  For example, no turns or hops should be given within the first year or two of pointe!  Your daughter could also do some strengthening exercises such as calf raises, or flex-and-points to build up the strength in her feet.

Expertise

I can answer lots about ballet, specifically the Vaganova syllabus. I'm still training, but both my parents were professional dancers, so most answers will be coming from them, not me. :) They're the experts. Obviously, questions about difficult technique, etc, would be better answered with someone else, but if you're just becoming interested in dancing, or are having problems with basic steps, like pirouettes or plies, then I may be able to help

Experience

I've seen ballet since the age of 0, because of my parents, and I am training to become a professional dancer now.
