Ballet/pointe at any age

Question
I'm 53 years old and I've just gone back to ballet after
not having danced ballet for about 30 years. (I danced
regularly from age 8 to 19, and went on pointe at age 11).
I have done other types of exercise all my life. I love
ballet and I was surprised to find how quickly everything
"comes back".

I would very much like to do some simple pointe work. Is it
safe for me at my age? (My last bone density check up was
okay though it was borderline in one of the three areas
measured - they don't measure feet). My teacher thinks it
is okay.

In general, putting some pressure on bones is actually a
way to increase bone density.

I don't plan to get too fancy - I'd be doing only a bit of
pointe work, mostly at the bar (certainly at first)

Is there anything I should keep in mind when buying shoes?
I'm thinking of getting Gaynor-Mindens (medium degree of
shank hardness) because they have some shock absorption
properties

Answer
Hi Sharon. Last question first: I've only been told by a few dancers that Gaynor Mindens are difficult, I haven't tried them myself. Also, the shock absorbing only needs to be in your feet, not the shoes. I guess I sound old fashioned. Other teachers have mentioned to me that Gaynor Mindens are not good for beginners, which you are, at least temporarily.

If I were you I would check that you can do all the exercises that are outlined in The Perfect Pointe Book. The focus is on the muscles in the soles of the feet, with the assumption that posture and turnout are already strong.

I describe all the foot muscle exercises in various articles at http://www.theballetstore.com

It's probably easiest to get the book, but if you prefer you can look through the articles and check on the exercises recommended for pointe preparation.

Ultimately, since I cannot see you dance, I would go with your teacher's assessment of the situation. Learning and doing the foot exercises would just make pointe work more controlled, and more enjoyable.

Good for you for getting back to ballet! All the best, Dianne.
