QuestionHi there.
I'm 14years old and started doing ballet only 3months ago. I am doing grade 5 and training in the cecchetti method. I do not have a very strong back and I am looking for exercises to improve my back?
And do you have any tips in doing the pirrouette (Especially with retire) and the arabesques?

AnswerFor back strengthening, lying on your stomach and doing "supermans" (arching up) are good back strengthening. You can also lie on a bench with your torso off the bench, have somebody sit on your legs, and arch up. Also, taking ballet class consistently and always making sure your leg is as high as it can be is probably the most important thing!
Lastly, work on your abdominal muscles as well (crunches, planks, etc.). This will help improve core strength which is related to back strength.
For pirouettes, make sure your fourth position is the proper width, meaning your feet are about shoulder width apart. When you push off bring your foot to retire directly under the knee cap, NOT to the side of the knee. Coordinate your arms with this movement, bringing your left side (if turning right, en dehor) around. Think of your basic stance during the turn and be sure to spot! (If you have any more specific questions about this don't hesitate to ask.)
For the arabesque, just continue to do them! I hated mine, but over the past three years they've slowly gotten higher and I don't detest them quite as much anymore. =] Just make sure your leg is directly behind your body.
