Question
Hi,
I am a fairly new dancer and I am auditioning to be a dancer at a performing arts high school. I am auditioning in ballet shoes not pointe and I have to come up with a one minute  routine. I am not sure of any type of technique to use for my piece. Please help me. I know that I would like to do leaps and a few turns however my pirouettes are not super clean?? Any tips?
Thanks.

Answer
It sounds like you should stick to your strengths.  I would ask your teachers what they suggest, as they would know better than me.  If you want to be considered for a ballet program you should keep your steps pretty classical, perhaps similar to a variation from a classical ballet that you find on youtube.  Otherwise, ask your teachers for their suggestions about the type of routine you should do.  You're right, a few leaps and turns should be put in to show off your technique.  I suggest making it a type of routine that has some emotion and demonstrates your artistry as well, so they can see the artist in you.  Best of luck!

Expertise

I can answer lots about ballet, specifically the Vaganova syllabus. I'm still training, but both my parents were professional dancers, so most answers will be coming from them, not me. :) They're the experts. Obviously, questions about difficult technique, etc, would be better answered with someone else, but if you're just becoming interested in dancing, or are having problems with basic steps, like pirouettes or plies, then I may be able to help

Experience

I've seen ballet since the age of 0, because of my parents, and I am training to become a professional dancer now.
