Ballet/Career in Ballet?

Question
Hi, my name is Stephanie. I'm 14 and I realize it's a little early to know that I want to be a pro ballerina, but I can't imagine not dancing. I love to dance and I need to dance. I just don't know how to get there. I go to a local ballet school. Should I be in a real one that teaches kids who are serious about ballet? Also, after high school, do I go to a college where I can major in ballet? Or is there a special school? I really don't know what to do. I've been dancing since I was five and have known for a while I want to become a pro ballerina.

Answer
Hi Stephanie. If you want to be a pro ballerina you need to get into a pro ballet school asap. Find out where your nearest pro school is: if you are in a major city, that should be easy. While their school year will be in progress, they may be auditioning as even while spots have been filled, sometimes applicants change their minds and spots may open up.

Most pro schools have an after school program for those wishing to study every day, even tho' it is not the pro programme, it is still the best training you can get. It also keeps you in touch with the school's audition schedules and so  forth.

If you get into a pro training course, you will not go to college and enter a dance department, you will keep training until you can audition for a professional company.

Start searching on the internet for schools in your area. Even small companies will have a school attached to them for training future dancers.

All the best, Dianne
