Question I am 19 years old and am 5'6" and 110 lbs. I currently am dancing with a small company but am looking to move up in the ballet world. I was wondering if I am around a good weight for dancing. Some instructors have mentioned I needed to lose some more weight, other suggest I am fine where I am.
Answer Ballet is a tough profession in this regard. From the pure numbers you gave me, I personally would say you're at a perfect weight for a dancer. However, as you already know, directors have their own personal opinions. It seems if you lose too much more weight you would no longer be healthy. I would talk to your teacher about ballet's aesthetics and let him/her know that you want to look like a dancer, but also want to maintain an athletic body and strength. You don't want to waste away! He or she knows you more personally than I do and will be able to help you more with the answer to this question. Best of luck with your career!
I can answer lots about ballet, specifically the Vaganova syllabus. I'm still training, but both my parents were professional dancers, so most answers will be coming from them, not me. :) They're the experts. Obviously, questions about difficult technique, etc, would be better answered with someone else, but if you're just becoming interested in dancing, or are having problems with basic steps, like pirouettes or plies, then I may be able to help
Experience
I've seen ballet since the age of 0, because of my parents, and I am training to become a professional dancer now.
