Ballet/Pirouettes and balancing

Question
Hi Ms.Connie, :) I have been having trouble balancing in my pirouettes. I can prepare for an en dehor turn and balance there without turning for a while, but when it comes to the actual pirouette I just can't seem to balance for  more than two turns on flat or en pointe. It's like I'm stuck at 2 pirouettes. When I do piqué turns or endedon turns I can do 3 at the least. Also, wondering if you could give me some exercises for balancing. :) thanks so much

Answer
Pirouettes are a frustrating step because there's no easy fix.  Really, it's practice makes perfect.  That said, I would look into getting a turning board, like the one here: http://www.discountdance.com/search/Turn-Board/
That might help you get the feel of doing more than two pirouettes.  It also sounds like your problem is very much mental, since you turn so well otherwise.  Try positive thinking; tell yourself before you turn that you can do it.  Visualization also helps; visualize yourself doing the three pirouettes.  Finally, make sure you're pulled up on your leg, your supporting leg is straight, you're in the proper alignment, and you're spotting.  You could also film a couple of your turns and see if this gives you any insight into the problem.

As for balancing, I often practice by taking a position at the bar and letting go.  For example, go to your pirouette position on pointe and let go, seeing how long you can balance for.  If you have a trampoline or one of these: http://www.return2fitness.co.uk/Rehabilitation/Wobble_Boards/standnsit35
you can also practice balancing in pirouette position (not in pointe shoes!) while standing on one of those.

I hope some of this is helpful!

Expertise

I can answer lots about ballet, specifically the Vaganova syllabus. I'm still training, but both my parents were professional dancers, so most answers will be coming from them, not me. :) They're the experts. Obviously, questions about difficult technique, etc, would be better answered with someone else, but if you're just becoming interested in dancing, or are having problems with basic steps, like pirouettes or plies, then I may be able to help

Experience

I've seen ballet since the age of 0, because of my parents, and I am training to become a professional dancer now.
