Ballet/Am I too old to do ballet?

Question
Hi. I am a 14 year old girl and my dream is to become a professional dancer. I've done weekly open ballet classes at a local studio for a few months and thats about it. I'm thinking about going to some more serious classes soon. My question is, is it too late to think about becoming a professional dancer?
I know I am starting very, very late, but I just feel this need to dance.
Also my parents are kinda against it. My mom keeps on reminding me " Remember you're only taking recreational classes" or "Now I don't want to be spending alot of money on this". It just really is unincouraging to me, but I am a very hard worker and a fast learner. What is your opinion? thanks

Answer
I'm glad to hear dance is so inspiring to you.  I'd like to tell you right away that it is very difficult to have a professional career in ballet if you start late.  That said, it isn't impossible.  If you look into more intense classes right away and make sure you're dancing at least six days a week, you have a shot!  Also, jazz and modern are more forgiving dance forms.  A strong ballet technique will give you a solid base in these other dance forms.  It's easier to find a professional dance job in jazz or modern for a late starter.
I do know many people who started late and still had careers.  I would go for it!  Just make sure you find a serious studio and a talented teacher.
Also, talk to your parents about how you feel.  If they see how passionate you are about dance they're more likely to support you.  You can discuss financial issues with your teacher; many dance studios give scholarships to dedicated students.
Best of luck, and contact me with any more questions.

Expertise

I can answer lots about ballet, specifically the Vaganova syllabus. I'm still training, but both my parents were professional dancers, so most answers will be coming from them, not me. :) They're the experts. Obviously, questions about difficult technique, etc, would be better answered with someone else, but if you're just becoming interested in dancing, or are having problems with basic steps, like pirouettes or plies, then I may be able to help

Experience

I've seen ballet since the age of 0, because of my parents, and I am training to become a professional dancer now.
