Question
I am a beginning ballet student. I am not on pointe. Iwas wondering if it is normal to have occassional pain in my toes when i do Bourre'es?
thank you, Janine

Answer
Hi Janine. You should not be having any toe pain doing bourees on demi pointe.....

If the pain is at the end of your toes, I'd guess that your shoes are too tight. It's good to have them snug, but not causing pain.

The pain could be muscular or joint pain. A chiropractor or physical therapist could check your joints and muscle strengths. Also, you could check and see if you are pressing your weight either onto your big toe joint, or out towards your little toe. This could cause pain, when being repeated, as in bourees.

If your foot muscles have gathered tension during class, without the relief of relaxation and stretching, you could experience pain from that.

The short answer is, no, it is not normal. Sorry if I went on too much about it....

All the best, Dianne
