Ballet/I want to get better at ballet

Question
Hello,

I just started ballet this January when I was fourteen, now fifteen I am really loving my time dancing ballet. Before that I was a soccer and volleyball player for 5 years. I just have one question: I am only taking one class per week but I want to get better. I want to get really good, like able to go on pointe and dance variations. However, how can I get better? I know a part of that answer is to take more classes (which I am planning to do when my summer breaks comes next month) but is there a way for me to become a better dancer?

thank you,
Som

ps: can I ask you one more thing? I know that for me to become a professional at this age might almost be impossible, so what else can I benefit in taking ballet? My mom is asking me and I don't know how to answer. (Oh if it is possible for me to become a professional, please tell me too!) thank you:)

Answer
Hi Som. Ballet is an extremely healthy activity in many ways. It strengthens both the lower and upper body and develops very fine reflexes. It is also intellectually and artistically demanding. Many dancers find a spiritual accomplishment as well.

You are doing the right thing in taking more classes. And the better your very basic movements are, the better you will advance.

has many technical articles that may help you, if you need any technical details.

I can't really tell if you could become a professional, since I cannot see you. Understand that professional students would have already taken 6-10 classes a week for several years, so catching up is not easy. But as long as you love dance, there is much to benefit!

All the best, Dianne
