Question
Why do all ballet dancers have to be so small?
If i am overweight, what are my chances of dancing with a top ballet company. I have greay skill in ballet. But, i need advice on how to either lose weight or tone up?

Answer
Ballet dancers are very thin because thin limbs appear longer on stage. Ballet is all about length, and the thinner the dancer, the longer she appears.

If you want to dance with a top ballet company you will have to look similar to the other dancers in that company. They will not hire a dancer that does not fit with the corps de ballet.

There are dance companies out there that feature dancers who are heavier than average ballet dancers, however. If you have the technique and the talent, you can definately have a career!

Expertise

I have knowledge of and access to information about ballet technique and style, professional companies, ballet history, general care of the body, questions about dance education and studios, and other general topics. I can especially offer advice to adult beginners. I will not answer any questions that would be better left to a medical professional.

Experience

I have not danced professionally, but I am a dedicated student of ballet and modern dance. I have taken classes in dance history, performed in amateur productions, attended professional performances, and read and watched many books and videos on the subject. I have also reviewed ballet performances for an online publication.
