Question
Hi, I'm a dancer and ballet is my favorite. I'm very flexible and can do the splits without stretching but I cannot seem to do a 180 degree perfect grande jeté,any tips?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Sarah. For a split jete, timing is important. Both legs have to reach their height just before the height of your jump, so that you hold that position for a split second while moving forward through your jump. The sensation is more like raising both legs higher, although you are really just holding the position. All the while having an upright back.

If you were sitting on the floor in the splits, it would be like stretching each leg away from you further, pulling outwards and long, and checking that the back and arm positions are exactly what you intended.

The speed of opening the legs factors in also. Strong and quick grand battments at the barre are preparation for grande jetes, especially with a strong push off of the toes as you stretch your foot.

Without seeing how you prepare and take off for your jumps, I couldn't suggest anything else.

I hope this helps. All the best, Dianne
