Question
Jennifer,
My teacher says I'm ready to go on pointe, but I don't know if I should.  I started dance two years ago and I'm only taking four classes a week (210 min total or 3 1/2 hours) because that's really all my family can afford, especially now that my brother is going to college.  Pointe shoes are going to be expensive, and my dad doesn't see why I should go up.  I do love to dance, and I've been looking forward to going on pointe, but is it really so great? is it worth it?

thanks a lot Jennifer,
tina

Answer
From what you say, I can't really answer this question for you. I cant tell you whether studying pointe is worth it for you... you have to make that decision for yourself.

4 classes a week is probably plenty for physical strength to begin pointe, and if your teacher says you're ready, I would trust her. If you ever think you might want to aim for a professional career in dance or teaching dance, taking pointe is a must. Beyond that, it is just a personal decision. There are many pros (improved balance, the sheer joy of dancing sur les pointes) and cons (cost, problems with the feet) and you need to weigh these for yourself.

Thank you for your question!

Expertise

I have knowledge of and access to information about ballet technique and style, professional companies, ballet history, general care of the body, questions about dance education and studios, and other general topics. I can especially offer advice to adult beginners. I will not answer any questions that would be better left to a medical professional.

Experience

I have not danced professionally, but I am a dedicated student of ballet and modern dance. I have taken classes in dance history, performed in amateur productions, attended professional performances, and read and watched many books and videos on the subject. I have also reviewed ballet performances for an online publication.
