Ballet/male dancers

QuestionHOWDY!
My name is Cletus, I am interested in ballet. Can you answer a few questions for me?
1. What age is inappropriate for male dancers to get started?
2. Do I have to wear tights? I find them very embarassing, even just to watch.
3. Any recommendations for getting started? I mean, a particular style or type of dance for men?
I appreciate any advice you can give.
Cletus
p.s. very soon I can help you in the automotive section as an expert!
AnswerHello!
I'm glad you are interested in ballet... it is wonderful for the body as well as for the mind.
1. There is no inappropriate age for men to start dancing. In fact, there is a 50 year old male beginner in one of my class who is doing quite well and improving rapidly.
2. It depends on your age and who teaches the class you decide to take. Usually, however, older beginners are allowed to wear sweat pants rather than tights to class... or at least running leggings, which are tight but offer more coverage. The purpose for wearing tights in class is so the teacher can see the way you are using your muscles so she/he can correct you more easily. However, most teachers understand that many men are uncomfortable in tights and allow them to wear more "modest" dancewear. However, dance belts (a sort of "ballet jock-strap") are required for all male dancers for your safty.
3. When it comes to beginning ballet, the particular style is not important because the basics are essentially the same accross the board. Most men will begin their training in the ladies' class and then participate in men's classes once their technique has become more advanced.
Make sure you find a class that you are comfortable in. Many studios and companies offer beginning teen and adult ballet classes, and I think you would probably be most comfortable in that environment.
Feel free to come to me with any more of your questions! Good luck with your ballet training!
