Ballet/never been a skinny girl... but why not?

Question
Hi Dianne. This seems like a silly question... but how late is too late to make the jump, so to speak, to pointe?  I danced all through childhood, but left for gymnastics instead and recently have discovered I miss it!  I've been back in the studio for about a year, and because of my training in other sports, my teachers feels like I have the strength to begin training.  My concern is that I'm not a small girl anymore.  Is it a health risk for feet and ankles.  Teacher seems not to think so.  What are your thoughts?

Thanks!
K

Answer
Hi Kate. Since I cannot see you, but you indicate you are heavier now, I would have to go on what your teacher thinks.

I can only assume that she thinks your basic technique is accurate enough to do safe pointe work.

Given that, and a good fit for pointe shoes (you can read some tips on getting exactly the right fit at http://www.theballetstore.com as well as articles and videos on breaking in your shoes) I would go on your teacher's judgment and go ahead.

Enjoy! All the best, Dianne
