Question
Hiya, I've been studying ballet for just over 10 years now. But only weekly classes as my mum started me off when i was 3 to correct my knock knees, but I really love ballet and would love to take it more seriosly, but the thing is, my school only does once a week lessons so I'm no way good enough to audition anywhere yet. What do you suggest i do?

Answer
A difficult question to answer without knowing your school or where you live... I will do my best to answer, and if you have any more specific questions, please feel free to ask me.

I find it difficult to believe that your ballet school only offers one class per week. Is there any way you can enroll in a class of a lower or higher level than the one you are in right now? Even if the classes arent exactly at your level, the extra time in the studio should help you immensely.

You need to talk to your current teacher and tell him/her that you want to start taking ballet more seriously. S/he will most likely have a lot of suggestions and encouragements for you because teachers understandably love it when their students share their passion for dance! If S/he knows you take ballet seriously, the teacher will take your lessons more seriously as well. Ask her/him how you can dance more often at their studio.

However, it is possible that the school you are in is not right for your goals. If that is the case, you need to start shopping around in your area for a school that will offer the instruction and classes you want. Most studios dont require an entrance audition, just a placement class to determine your level.

If you would like me to help you with more specific aspects of your problem, please email me and I will do my best to help you.

Thanks for your question, and good luck!

Expertise

I have knowledge of and access to information about ballet technique and style, professional companies, ballet history, general care of the body, questions about dance education and studios, and other general topics. I can especially offer advice to adult beginners. I will not answer any questions that would be better left to a medical professional.

Experience

I have not danced professionally, but I am a dedicated student of ballet and modern dance. I have taken classes in dance history, performed in amateur productions, attended professional performances, and read and watched many books and videos on the subject. I have also reviewed ballet performances for an online publication.
