Question Help, I am taking lessons but I have a great difficulty hearing/recognizing the rhythms or beats. I am looking for a cd of basic dance rhythms--cha cha, waltz, various swing, etc,--I just want the rhythms so I can begin to learn and recognize them. I heard that there had been one out and in use and that it may have been related in some way to Corky Ballas. Do you know of any? This way I could listen in the car, to each kind over and over.
Answer Richard:
I apologise for the long wait, my computer was down for 3 weeks, I finally got a geek to fix it.
some ideas for you:
1.Ask your instructor for a sample cd of various dance songs with a listing of what they are: Waltz, swing, foxtrot, etc. I do this for my students all the time. A CD can be loaned or copied, or sold.
2. go to the internet, or a 2nd -hand cd record store and ask for dance cds. listen to the songs and read what it is.
3. Ask frinds or other students for a loan, gift or sale of these cds.
4. There are websites that play sample muic for you, some that give you song lists as long as 20 songs from the last 50 years. I was looking at one just last week which listed thle top 20 waltzes of all time -including:" Are you lonesome tonight: by elvis presley, and "Can I have this dance" by patti page, etc.
5.go to places like napster and pick outsongs, download thim into files and ask friends, teachers, or other students to tell you what they are.
6.When I do DJ work I tell dancers: this is a swing or foxtrot, this is a salsa, cha cha, or rumba. ask your dj for that info also.
7. Watch what other dancers are doing and choose the same dance.
8. google dance music snd check out some sites.
9. Places like arthur murray sell cds of dance music too.
10. Be patient, keep dancing, the more you dance and listen to music- the easier it gets to spot what dance to do.
And last, think about playing music, I sing and play drums in 3 bands and am always learning new music. Let me know how you progress. Thanks for your patience.
