QuestionHi, I am from NC and went to High School with Sammy Stewart. I know he left somewhat disgraced from the Orioles, and is somewhat disgraced in my home town, what can you tell me about him...did you follow his career? How long did he plaY.? I am in Washington State now and when I was last in town he was very reclusive :(..Thanks Judy
AnswerHello Judy,
Yes, I remember Sammy Stewart very well. Sammy was an extremely versatile guy which made him very valuable to management. He could pitch as a starter, a long reliever, a short reliever, and he could also close games. He was also able to pitch several days in a row which was another bonus. He began his big league career with the Orioles in 1978 and played eight years in Baltimore. He pitched for the Boston Red Sox in 1986 before finishing his career with the Cleveland Indians in 1987. He won 59 games in his career against 48 losses and had an excellent 3.59 earned run average. I remember him as being somewhat of a loner, someone who was always quiet and never complained about the many different situations in which the Orioles asked him to pitch in.
