Hello, Sammy is currently living in Asheville NC. He is a crack cocaine addict. He has sold is World Series rings to feed his addiction as well as most of his baseball trophies etc. He was recently served with a habitual felon indictment. He was living in a trailer but i think he has lost that. He was recently arrested again (within the past week) for possession of cocaine. He is divorced from his wife and has lost alot of weight. He will soon be incarcerated in NC at the Dept of corrections.
What a way to go for a guy who was on top of his gane and world.

Dianne/Tony – I regrettably feel obligated to give you the low down on Sammy!! I live in the same town with him in NC, where he returned after his baseball carrier. The news on him is not good I’m sorry to say!! Sammy is a local drug addict he is in out of jail; he has been arrested for many different charges relating to his drug use. I don’t know if you knew this but Sammy had two kids that where born with a crippling and fatal disease. He a banded them and divorced his wife (who also had a drug problem). I’m also sorry to say that they both died a short time later. Sammy has ruined his life completely, and is the laughing stock of his home town Swannanoa, NC he is a lot like "Otis" the town drunk. The worse thing is that he still draws some kind of pension from baseball, and when he receives the check it goes entirely for drugs. Then he starts stealing and bumming for money to support his habit. I really regret having to tell you this but it is fact.

Amazingly and sadly enough, Dianne and Tony and others who wondered if Sammy fell off the face of the planet... he pretty much did just that. I'm an officer with the city of Asheville in NC and we have been dealing with Sammy for several years now. He explained that during his career, he got hooked on drugs very badly and said that this is why he deteriorated from the game so rapidly. I actually came to this site after Sammy was convicted in court just today on Habitual Felon charges for continual Cocaine possession. He received 6 years in prison and has squandered every penny he ever made on cocaine. Quite an amazing and true story. You can go to the North Carolina Department of Corrections website and look at what he looks like now. You won't beleive it. You would think that baseball would have taught him... when it comes to crime, 3 strikes and your out.
Thanks,
Tamara

He was just sentenced to over 6 years in prison after pleading guit to being a habitual felon. If the articles are not there I saved to my computer. I grew up with Sammy from about the age of 3. I know him perhaps better than anyone. Sammy his wife and I have been close for years. He has really screwed up! It is truly a sad story with no one to blame but Sammy!

I was friends with Sammy back in the 1980's and I was with him when he got a call from a local TV sports reporter (Vince Bagli)telling him that he was traded to Boston for Jackie Gutierrez. Sammy was disappointed that Hank Peters did not call him in person, but he did not leave in disgrace.
Sammy had 2 kids with Cystic Fibrosis, and I think that this was a major contributor to his personal problems that plagued him later in his career as well as currently. His son, Colin, passed away of the disease at about age 9 or 10 and I do not know what ever happened to his daughter.
I just read this article in the Baltimore Sun, and did an internet search on Sammy and wound up at this site. I hope that he can get his life straight, and I wish my old friend the best.
Sammy Stewart, who pitched for the 1983 World Series champion Orioles during his 10 major league seasons, has been sentenced to at least six years in prison after pleading guilty in Asheville, N.C., to drug charges and other crimes.
Stewart, 51, pleaded guilty Monday in Buncombe County Superior Court to being a habitual felon, felony drug possession and failure to appear in court on a felony, Stewart's attorney, Roger Smith, said. He could spend nearly nine years in prison, Smith said.
Stewart's trial was to begin this week. His plea agreement allowed the charges to be consolidated into a single habitual felon charge for sentencing purposes.
Since 1988, Stewart has been charged with more than 60 offenses and sent to prison six times.
Stewart, a career reliever, played for the Orioles from 1978-1985 before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for the 1986 season, then to the Cleveland Indians for his final year in 1987. He had a career record of 59-48 with an ERA of 3.59. His best season was 1983, when he was 9-4 with 95 strikeouts and a 3.62 ERA.

I also knew Sammy personally for a number of years. He is a great happy-go-lucky guy! I am so saddened to hear of his personal "dragons". Please people, this is a human being who could use some support!

Sadly, Sammy is serving time in a correctional facility in North Carolina. Stat's show that since 1989 he has been arrested 26 times and charged with 43 crimes. Sammy has stated that he got hooked on Crack Cocaine shortly after he retired and his life has gone downhill since then.

Most of what is said here is true I am a Correction Officer at the prison he is in and I see him about every day I work and he is a very nice guy I think what is truly sad is how people like to write crap about him on how he ruined his life and hes washed up and no good people shouldnt bash him like that if they knew his personality they would know just how nice a person he is. I shouldnt defend him I guess cause he did it to himself, he hated drugs in highschool but somebody introduced them to him and got him hooked that is the person to blame as drug dealers only breed more drug users. I hope the best for him and hope he stays away from the drugs when he gets out like he has told me. He is planning on writing a book while in prison titled "Lifes not what its cracked up to be"

Unfortunately, the news is rather sad, regarding Sammy. He's been battling numerous addictions to drugs. And,has been arrested multiple times, due to his drug use.I'm not one hundred percent certain,if he's currently in prison. But,he has spent much of his post baseball life,in and out of jail.

There's an update on Sammy as of October 2006 if one types "sammy stewart orioles" in the google search box. Sammy may also be located at the North Carolina Dept. of Corrections website. I don't think Sammy took care of his body during his playing days (late nights and alcohol) and after he retired (hard drugs). These facts are in his extensive public arrest record. Sammy obviously took the death of his 11-year-old son very hard (cystic fibrosis). He's had a tough time over the past 20 years and he was finally sentenced as a habitual offender in North Carolina.

I personally have known Sammy for a very long time including his entire family. I pray that he is on the Road to Recovery and can put all the past Demons behind him. I am and always will be his friend. Sammy is a good old boy who back years ago, would give you the shirt off his back and make you laugh while giviing it to you. I know there is a great guy inside that big ole body.
