Some extra game information...

Back in 1967, I was 11 years old and remember listening to the entire game on radio - pitch by pitch.  I remember that it was a crazy game as Steve Barber was trying to regain his form from his 1966 injury season.  He was very wild in the strike zone and walked a lot of batters.

Interesting facts are:

-Orioles lifted all star catcher Andy Etchebarren in the 5th inning for a pinch hitter since the Orioles couldn't score.  Then, rookie Larry Haney came in and was on the spot.

-It seemed like Steve Barber walked the bases loaded every inning when Haney came in but somehow escaped every time (aka Don Stanhouse).

-Finally in the 8th, the Orioles managed a run on a Paul Blair triple and Brooks Robinson sacrifice fly (if I remember right).

-With only three outs to go, Steve Barber walked the bases loaded.  Then he retired two batters.  Before he could get that last out, Larry Haney committed a passed ball that let in the tying run.

-On the next play, a ground ball to Aparicio was tossed right to Mark Belanger, who was the rookie utility infielder that year.  He was brought in as a defensive replacement at second base.  He dropped the ball and the winning run scored.  He would later win 8 Gold Gloves in the 70's.  Stu Miller was brought in for the final out.

-The Orioles would have a chance to tie in the bottom of the ninth but could not.

That loss was the beginning of a long losing 1967 season and difficult for me as they won the World Series the year before.  Steve Barber could never find his control and would be dropped the following month and go to the Yankees.

Being a Tiger fan for life, I remember this game very well.  It was on a Sunday afternoon and Detroit seemed to have runners on base every inning.  I have read about no hitters the last few days with the Angels-Dodgers game on 6-28-08 but somehow the Steve Barber/Stu Miller game is never mentioned.

As a followup, I found a website that details each major league and exactly what happened so I looked up the Steve Barber no-hitter to find out how far off my memory was.

-It turns out that Andy Etchebarren was lifted in the 8th inning (not the 5th) as the Orioles were desperately trying to score a run for Steve Barber.  Then, they brought in Larry Haney to catch the ninth.

-It wasn't Paul Blair or Brooks Robinson that were involved in the run scored.  It was Curt Blefary that would get on base and was moved around to third, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Luis Aparicio.

-Woody Held was the Orioles second baseman that day and he was pinch hit for in the 8th inning as well.  He was replaced by Mark Belanger.  I think Dave Johnson must not been able to play that day.

-I was correct about the crazy ninth inning.
