Question
How do I find out what the major labels are spending on promotions, marketing and advertising?

Answer
Hi Tia,

All major labels spend differently on their bands. The top acts get millions but what is little known is that these acts have to pay it all back with 12 % of cd sales ! that would take awhile so the label sends them on tour to make sure they can pay it back. The rest of the signed acts that are new will get minimal ( several 100,000.00 ) at best. Courtney love did an amazing article called " Courtney love does the math"...GOGGLE THIS AND READ IT !..I am very glad im not signed to a major but an indie...its an 80-20 split meaning you get the 80%...a much better deal as you will find out. So the answer is : it varies depending on the level of the act and how MAJOR the label is. Remember, with a major....you owe and if you cant pay all that back...your sued ! With an Indie ( im signed with Rhombus Records), you spend the $$ you have on your own publicity and promotion and there are plenty of good ones to help you out on the web....WARNING !!! THIS IS A SHARK INFESTED AREA So make sure you check them out good. Goggle " band promotion " and "free band promotion" you will be glad you did and don't forget to read the Courtney Love article!
Good luck,
