Question
I'm a singer I don't have a band, but I sing and I have a few people at my school who like to hear my singing. And I love singing so I decided to make it a profession I've also sang at a funeral and am taking choir next year and I'm 13 I live in a small town in virginia and they don't have a place near here where you can sing live so I don't kno where to get seen or get a talent booker or manager where should I start?

Answer
Hi Autumn,

It looks like you're on the right path already. You've got the right idea - sing whenever and wherever you can. Here's the thing about being 13, your voice is still in it's developmental stages. You could find a band to sing with or attempt to play professionally, but it's going to be very hard living in Virginia. Plus, because you're underage, you can't sing in a bar.

However, there are things that you can do to get ready to become a professional singer. Choir is an excellent place to start. You could also see if your school has a drama club and if they do musicals (most do). See if there are any restaurants that do karaoke and don't have an age limit. In short, if they will let you sing there, then sing! If your parents will spring for vocal lessons, that would really be helpful as well.

Best of luck!

I can answer questions about booking, fees, contracts, management, promotions, media, copyright, publishing, and any basics about a musician's life. I can't answer legal questions, other than copyright and publishing. Don't fret if you feel like it's a "dumb" question. All bands run across the same issues, big and small, and I'm more than happy to give you my advice. Whether or not you take it is up to you!

I own a small management firm called Gunjer Productions (www.gunjerproductions.com). I represent bands in Charlotte, ranging from EBM to jazz. I am a manager and booking agent.
