Hi Marc,

Even though artists are protected under the 1st ammendment of freedom of speech, I think they should be aware of what their lyrics mean to people. Take a look at the case of marilyn manson and the kid that commited suicide a few years back as a result of the mesage in one of his songs or the school shootings where the shooters are death rock / gothic types that the music incites them to violence. Rap music does the same and has the same effect. Now i am all for the freedom of speech right but because we have the right to sing about whatever does not make it right to sing about these things. I predict that in the future this "angst" theme will continue as it would take an act of congress to change it. So to answer your question..YES...they should be held liable for the effect of their lyrics and should be aware of it. The sad reality is that most of them are aware of it but it sells and as long as it does, tey will continue to write like that and hide behind the first ammendment. When Barry White sings his seduction loves songs, people wanna make love or relaxed but when you listen to the afore mentioned music, its makes you wanna do what? You know the answer.

Great question.
