I am in considering getting another mic, mixer, amp and speakers for a decent yet affordable PA system. If I join a band, should I charge my band to use my stuff? I would hate to feel like a jerk charging, but feel like I would be a fool to let them use it for free. Or worse stingy if I don't let them use it at all. It costs me money to obtain/maintain and transport, so why let them use it free if it will be at my cost? What are your thoughts?
Frank
Answer Hi Frank,
I can see your point economically, but unfortunately the generally accepted principle when it comes to band gear is "all for one and one for all!" The only way I can think of to help reimburse you for your cost is to ask for a higher cut of a nightly take because the band, as a unit, does not have to hire a sound guy because you have equipment. I'm not saying that it will go over well, but that's the only way that I think you'll get any money back. I definitely think attempting to "charge" the band to use your stuff will make you a solo act pretty quick!
I can answer questions about booking, fees, contracts, management, promotions, media, copyright, publishing, and any basics about a musician's life. I can't answer legal questions, other than copyright and publishing. Don't fret if you feel like it's a "dumb" question. All bands run across the same issues, big and small, and I'm more than happy to give you my advice. Whether or not you take it is up to you!
