Question
I have 2 Mb broadband, and a speed test shows it as just below this. I've been on 2 Mb for a long time, but recently it's seemed much slower. This might sound like a daft question, but is it possible for a speed test to show just below 2 Mb, while actually appearing on my screen much more slowly?

As a separate question, I frequently lose my wireless connection. I've tried changing the channel, and even the router. What's the most likely cause? Any connection with the fact that mine and my neighbour's cars lock/unlock by themselves?

Answer
Hi andrew,

It is possible, yes.

apparent speed has nothing to do with the actual speed of your connection, keep in mind that internet is mostly asymetric in transmission.

if you are using a wireless  device (WLAN) to connect to the internet, it is also possible that someone else is connected trough your system wirelessly and sharing your resources, thus slowing you down.

try other connection, like the next door neighbor or a house 1 or 2 blocks away, if shows diffrent then your connection is the problem, if it is close to the same then your PC is probably the culprit.

regarding the doors unlocking and locking by them selves, this could probably be caused by a very strong interference nearby. otherwise that will be spooky (joke)

have a nice day
thank you
