Banjo/What is it??

Question
A stringed instrument was passed along to me when my father passed away 16 yrs ago.  It belonged to his father. I am just guessing that it could be 90-100 years old.  If my grandfather were alive he would be 110, and he had it as a small boy.  It looks like a miniature banjo. Four strings, approx. 20 inches long, and the round part is about 7 inches in diameter.  It is in it's original case which is pretty rough looking, but the instrument itself looks to be in great condition.  The only identifying mark it has is on a metal piece, and it says Waverly.  Can you tell me what it is, and any other information about it?  Could it have any value at all, or should I just get rid of it?  Any insight would be most appreciated.  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Denise

From your description, it seems that you are in possession of a banjo-ukulele.  These are not especially collectible in most cases (that is, you won't sell it for a bunch of money), but they are definitely fun to play and can serve a nice rhythmic function in string bands.

Tuning and string selection are the same as a standard ukulele.

Best regards and enjoy the banjo uke!  Do you have a photo of the instrument?

I do NOT appraise banjos and so I can't give you a dollar valuation for your instrument. After all, the best thing to do with a nice banjo is to go ahead and play it. But I'm happy to discuss clawhammer (old-time) banjo set-up, recordings, musicianship, practice tips, repertoire.
