Bankruptcy Law/Should I file for Chapter 7? Do I qualify?

Question
I have had severely poor luck in the last year with my
finances and had to move 3 times from Japan, back home to
Michigan, then to NYC, and finally to where I currently
am, in San Francisco. In the process I was unemployed and
in addition to the debt I already had, have amassed over
$10,000 in cc debt. I make $2,000 a month after taxes
but am under severe pressure with my finances because of the
cost of rent and cost of living in San Francisco. In your
opinion would it be best to file, or is there another
avenue that I could pursue that would be less damaging
to my credit, but also make my debt more manageable.
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Robert SF

Answer
You should examine all your options to see what works best for you.  If your credit is still good, then it might make sense to negotiate with your creditors to keep your credit score as high as possible.  A lot depends on what you expect your income to be in the near future, because the credit card debt will keep accruing interest.  I suggest that you schedule a consultation to go over you situation in more detail.
