Question
I have a live-in girlfriend.  She is not on the lease, we have no joint obligations.  She is filing Chapter 7 for the second time.  Since she can't file until February, she is running up her credit card bills, which I consider stealing.  Do I have to worry about being responsible for any of her debt in New York State?  We are supposed to move to a new apartment next month, with her being a joint leaseholder.

Answer
Her filing bankruptcy or being delinquent on her credit card debts should not affect you at all unless you are a signatore to the cardholder agreements.  Of course it will ultimately affect HER credit rating, so that will affect your joint ability to do things in the future.
