Bankruptcy Law/Avoid Garnishments w/out Bankruptcy?

Question
Thank you for your quick reply.  I do realize it is a lot of information.  The one thing that I am most worried about at the moment, and perhaps you can answer is this:

Is there anyway I can prevent further garnishments without filing bankruptcy?

I'm afraid if I do find a car, and some way to pay for it, that it too will be garnished.  And the personal property garnishment is my real fear as it may be imminent.

I did contact a local bankruptcy attorney, but again, finding the fees (and fast) is going to be extremely difficult.

Thank you.

Answer
Once a creditor sues you and gets a judgment, they would look to garnish wages, freeze bank accounts, and/or put a lien on real estate.  Your state may have exemptions to protect some household items and assets, that you may be able to use to protect certain items you own.  Check with your bankruptcy lawyer to see what is available.
