Question
I live in Akron, OH and am filing Ch 7 and surrendering my home in the bankruptcy. After surrendering the home and bankruptcy is discharged, am I still responsible for keeping up the property and paying for insurance on it, taxes, sewer etc.? I don't want any surprises. My lawyer is more of a wait til something happens then we will do something about it kind of guy and isn't very helpful in answering these questions. I have read alot of people having issues with the town suing them because the property is in their name still and grass isn't being mowed. Also have read that as long as home is still deeded in your name you are responsible for insurance on it. I have been laid off and not sure I would even be able to make any type of payment on the property to keep it up or insurance, taxes etc. What am I really responsible for if anything once the bankruptcy is discharged? Thank you for any advice or knowledge you can provide with this.

Answer
Yes, you have a duty to maintain the property until the foreclosure is complete.  Since you are the owner until then, you are required to keep up with all city and local codes, otherwise you are subject to fines by the respective agencies, which are not dischargeable.
