Bankruptcy Law/California domestic partnership bankruptcy

Question
Hello-

I live in California.  My opposite sex domestic partner is filing for bankruptcy.  We do not have any shared assets, except for one shared bank account that has no money in it.

My question is, can I be liable for his debt through the bankruptcy?  I have quite a lot of monetary assets that are tied to my family and am concerned about the safety of these.

Please advise.

Thank you,
Sandy

Answer
Whether or not you are liable for his debts has nothing to do with his filing bankruptcy.  You're either liable or you're not; this is a matter of state law.  You need to discuss this with a family law attorney.

Generally speaking, if you didn't incur the debt, you shouldn't be liable for it, but I don't know how community property/debt works in a California Registered Domestic Partnership.
