Question
I filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy that was discharged in 2002.  I thought at the time that it would stay on my credit report for 7 years.  I see now that a bankruptcy stays on your credit report for 10 years.  Is that a change?  Does that apply to me since it was 7 years when I filed, or am I wrong and it was 10 years back then as well?

Answer
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing stays on your credit report for 10 years. To my knowledge it stayed on your credit report for 10 years even back in 2002. Generally for Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases the bankruptcy filing stays on your credit report for 7 years, but Chapters 7 bankruptcy have stayed for 10 years.
