Bankruptcy Law/question

Question
Hi,

I'm currently a student and I have almost no money and very little income. I'm going to be sued. (I did not do any kind of criminal act or wrongdoing) From the lawyers I have talked to I cannot afford any of their fees.

What do you suggest I do? I live in the state of Illinois. Are there any free or discounted lawyers that you know I should look into? Most that I have talked to that are provided by the state do not practice the type of law that I need.

Any suggestions?

I'm really hoping this lawsuit gets dropped, as I have no money, no assets, barely any income.

thanks

Answer
You should try to consult with a bankruptcy attorney to see if you qualify to file bankruptcy and to determine if this debt can be discharged in bankruptcy. There are some legal aid societies in most areas that can either help you file for bankruptcy if you qualify or can assist your in filing the necessary paperwork. Generally these organizations have specific requirements on income and other eligibility requirements. If you cannot afford an attorney you should try to determine if you can qualify for free legal assistance through one of these organizations. Also a lot of bar associations have attorneys that volunteer to help individuals for free. Check with your local bar association to see if they offer any free legal assistance.
