Question
Hi,

I filed bankruptcy in December of 2003.  Now the IRS sent me a letter saying I owe them over $3,000 for some debt the credit card companies forgave me.  Do I have to pay this?

It depends on what tax years you're talking about, when the returns were last due to be filed for those years, the date the return was actually filed, the assessment dates, etc.   If the taxes would have otherwise been nondischargeable and you paid them with your credit card, then yes, you have to pay that debt.   If you filed in 12/03 and the taxes were owed for years 2000-2003, then they were definitely not dischargeable and you have to pay that credit card portion.  If they were for years prior to 2000, then you MIGHT not have to pay it, but you need a tax/bankruptcy specialist to do an analysis on that.
