Question
Hi,

I'm confused as to why God didn't allow King David to build the Jewish Temple and reserved this task to David's son, King Solomon? I heard God considered David to be a man of violence. However, didn't God say to kill the Caananites and other heathen people? Did David just do what God instructed hinm to do? Could you please explain where God was coming from on this subject?

Answer
Brison,

Thank you for your question. I will do my best to answer.

1 Kings 5:3
Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.

You are correct that David was commanded of the Lord to fight these wars. But God not allowing David to build the temple because of this, was not a punishment. God allowed David to recapture the city of Jerusalem. God allowed David to bring in all the materials Solomon would need to build the temple. But the responsibility was Solomon to build it, not Davids. I believe it is is as simple as that. David was chosen to make all things ready to build, and Solomon was chosen to build.

Hope this helps.

Experience

I attended a fundamental independent Baptist church for many years. While attending the church I learned the doctrines and beliefs of the Baptist movement. I now attend an independent Pentecostal church. I have served there as an Elder for fourteen years. I minister in song with the choir and worship team. I am also the new member’s class coordinator, men's ministry director, and the Harvest Riders motorcycle ministry president.
In 1993 the Lord called me to "...preach the Gospel where ever I open the door..." I have had the privilege of ministering God's Word to churches in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. In those meetings we have seen the Lord save, heal, deliver, and fill people will His Spirit.
