if we are not under law, why do we even bother to follow any?

Thanks for this great question.  We obey God, not to gain salvation, but because we love Him.

John 14:15,23
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
