Baptists/baptism

Question
We Southern Baptist believe that baptism is an act of obedience to publicly symbolize our inner change after receiving Christ as Savior. We do not believe it is an essential part of the salvation process. Do you know scripture that substantiates that? Church of Christ believe it is essential for salvation because of such verses as: Mark 16:15,16 - He Who Believes and Is Baptized Will Be Saved.
Acts 2:38 - Repent and Be Baptized for Remission of Sins
1 Peter 3:21 - Baptism Saves Us
Galatians 3:27 - We Are Baptized into Jesus
Acts 22:16 - Be Baptized and Wash away Your Sins
I have been a Southern Baptist for 51 years, but now I am confused about the role of baptism. The only thing that will clear it up for me is scripture, not doctrine. Any suggestions for me? Thank you, Cheryl

Answer
Blessings and thank you for your questions

You are right.  Baptism is not necessary for salvation.

John 3:16 says "Whosoever believes"  not whosoever is baptized.

Romans 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Now having said that, Baptism is every important.  It is the first act that we should perfom after our salvation.
