Baptists/Baptists and sign of the cross

Question
I'm writing a fictionalized account of a famous black woman, now deceased.  She grew up in Texas in the early 1900's, with a mother who was a Southern Baptist.  In the story, when the woman is in her mid-twenties, I have her crossing herself before she performs a dangerous aviation stunt.  I've been told that only Catholics, never Baptists, would have used the sign of the cross.  Is that correct?  Thank you for your information.

Answer
Amy,

The Catholics are the only ones who cross themselves. Southern Baptist going into something dangerous would most likely pray and ask God to watch over them or even have someone else such as a pastor or close friend pray over them. So I guess that is what you needed. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
