Expert: Dr. Ronald E. Shultz Date: 6/12/2008 Subject: baptist wedding ceremonies
Question Hello, our family is catholic and my nephew just got married to a baptist girl last weekend, her father a pastor married them, during the church ceremony he stated that divorce is a sin and god looks down on divorced persons, my nephews parents (my sister and her ex husband) are divorced. the woman who had the affair with my sisters husband was added to the ceremony as a mother of the groom, my family is extremely upset that this woman was included in the ceremony and the disrespect he showed my sister. Then at the reception our family as well as my nephews fathers family were seated in another room of the reception hall and the last to eat at the buffet. I need to know if this is normal behavior for baptist that if you are not of their faith this is the way you are treated.
Answer No most Baptists would not treat you like that.
Catholicism teaches that divorce is a sin as well and most priests will not marry someone that has been married before unless it was anulled by the Pope or of course, a widow otherwise it is a mortal sin.
There are only a few instances when a divorced person is allowed to remarry biblically. If a person is divorced under other circumstances and yet remarries they are living in a state of continual adultery. That is a position held by many non-Baptists as well though there are some Baptists and others who hold different views.
Despite all that I must say that the family did not act appropriately and if I would have been there I would have rebuked that pastor. I apologize on the behalf of Christ for their behavior.
This was a family function and family should have been treated with respect and placed according to their familial relationship. They lacked grace and discernment in their judgment.
You cannot judge an entire group by the actions of one pastor and his family. I don't believe that all priests are pedophiles though some are indeed that way. Not all Baptist pastors are jerks.
Again, I am deeply sorry for your shame and hurt. That pastor will answer for his actions to his Superior at some point in time. May God heal your pain and lead you into a perfect and loving relationship with His Son.
