Baptists/Sunday school
Expert: D.David - 10/1/2009
QuestionI,m doing a paper (for Theology class)on the history of Sunday school. I'd like to know what denominations have Sunday school today? I know a lot of churches (especially large ones) have eliminated it because of dual or triple services, but traditionally who still have it besides Baptists?
AnswerHi Lesha, sorry for the delay in answering your question.
There are a number of denominations(given below) who follow Sunday School programmes in their Churches. Most of them worship on Sundays and so is called Sunday School. However, there are a few,(very very few) who worship on Saturday and their is called the Sabbath School, like the Seventh-Day Adventist, and few others. They too have a strong and well organised Sabbath School programes for their Church member and the Community as well.
Sunday Schools were started mainly by the Roman Catholic Church for younger adults. Other Churches who embraced the Sunday observance as the Sacred day(unbiblical) also adopted the services and practises which included the Sunday School programme.
Some of the Denomination such as :
1. The Roman Catholic,
2. The Methodist Church
3. The JW
4. Lutheran Church
5. The Pentecostal Church
The list can go on and on. Infact, most of the Church apart from the SDA and the New life Movement, and a few others.
I hope this information will be beneficial to you or go on the websites of the different Churches and see their doctrines, they will indicate if they follow Sunday school programmes.
Thank you and God bless you in your study programme.
