Baptists/question on hedge of thorns of protection

Question
When I was going through a divorce I prayed for a hedge of thorns around my ex- wife.  I saw satan in her lashing out at God, at me through my ex-wife.  I saw God literally working on her through her actions, etc.  This prayer was a direct result of my faith in God that I was being obedient, and reading "How to save your marriage alone", Dr. Wheat.
My question is I thought there was a difference between a hedge of thorns, and a hedge of protection.  Is there different hedges referenced by God that we as Christians should pray about? I am currently praying for a hedge of thorns of protection for a Christian friend that has strayed from God.  I obtained this direction from God after reading your info. on this web site.  I have felt a tremendous amount of peace since I've been praying for her.

Answer
Actually, a hedge of thorns can be a hedge of protection. If you remember the Uncle Remus stories Br'er Rabbit wanted to be thrown into the thorns or briar patch because it would be a place of protection to him but to Br'er Fox or any larger animal it would be a barrier or a means of thwarting their goals or purposes.  To the lazy man in Proverbs his laziness became a hedge of thrones pricking him every way he turned but in Hosea it was a means of sending Gomer back to her husband and keeping her from her lovers and her lovers from her thus making it really a hedge of protection. It kept her from evil and evil from her even though at the time it most likely did not appear to be protection from her perspective.  Thus they are somewhat the same.

I have done a sermon on the various aspects of hedges and here is the link.

I will agree with you on the hedge for your friend.  May God place a hedge of thorns around her to keep her from evil and evil from her that she may be protected by God's grace and led back into His arms of love and reconciliation.

May God hedge you in as well and grant you great wisdom as well as you study His word and minster to those around you.

He is risen!
