Question
My daughter just lost her baby on 7-5-09 ,she was about 17-18 weeks pregnant, we don't know what do do or say, we are catholic,is it a sin to cremate the baby, she saw the baby move on the ultrasound so it is such a hard decision for her and us

Answer
Dear Friend,
Thank you for your question. First I offer my genuine sympathy and concern to your daughter, yourselves and the whole family. I will pray for you all and ask that God will bring some comfort, and help you bear the pain of this tragedy.
As a Baptist I am not an expert in Catholic theology but I know that Catholic priests in England (where I am a Pastor) do sometimes lead cremation services. The bible says nothing about cremation being a sin. Some Christians find cremation a problem as they fear that on resurrection morning resurrection will not be possible. This is an irrational fear as, if this were the case, those who have died in a fire or those who have been in the grave so long there is nothing but dust left would also be in a predicament. God is well capable of coping with all this.
In short I do not believe it would be a sin to have the child cremated. If your heart is right towards God and you seek the best then God is satisfied.
I hope these comments are of some help and trust that whatever service you choose to have you will know a measure of peace from God.
Stuart Woodward.
