Question
I am a southern baptist, who would like to understand and be able to simply explain what election means.

Hope you are well and that this is ok.
Election comes from a Hebrew word meaning choice.
In Bible terms election is for those who have been, or will be elected or chosen by God to become the First Fruits of Salvation.
Also we would not chose God unless he first chose us.

I am am a Deacon and secretary of my church, and also spend lots of time now also ministering to people in old folks homes as well as other outreach work.

I do not call them clients, they are people in need of the love of God and of people.
I have mentored many young people, including those that are in our local prison, to hopefully live an honest and Christian life.
