Baptists/Gossiping a sin
Expert: Rev. Stuart Woodward - 1/27/2010
QuestionHello. This question may sound a little bit odd but I have read that gossiping about another individual is sin. What is the difference between gossip and just simply talking about them or other events if it isn't in a negative way?
AnswerHello Rose,
Thank you for your question. It is impossible to have everyday conversations and never mention others but it is what we say and how we say it that matters. The bible is clear that slander (speaking untruth about someone) is wrong. However, it can also be wrong to speak the truth about someone. If you become aware that an individual is battling with a particualr area of temptation, to talk to others about it may be telling the truth but it is damaging to the person concerned.
There are two clear tests that we should try to apply, though they are not always easy. First it is best not to say anything about someone in their absence that you would not say in their presence. Secondly we should ask whether what we are saying enhances or damages a person's reputation with others.
It seems to me that if we try to steer this course we will no go far wrong.
I hope these comments are of some help.
God bless you.
