Question
My Pastor has often made reference to the fact that Jesus loved us so much that he asked God for a body so he could come 'down'.  Is there a Bible reference to this?

Answer
JoAnne, thank you for your question. Your Pastor does not know his Bible. There is no reference that "he asked God for a body so he could come 'down'."

John 3:16 debunks that notion "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." Notice what John is saying. "For God so love the world" which means God loved us so much HE sent Jesus, not Jesus asked God. "That He (GOD) gave His  only begotten son, it does not say Jesus gave himself.

John 17:21 states "so that the world may believe that You sent Me." The "You" is referring to GOD who sent Me (Jesus). Jesus did not ask God to send Him.

JoAnne, I would advise you find another church as this Pastor is teaching falsely. Check out yourself what he is saying by reading and research the Scriptures on your own.
