Baptists/Know the Big Givers

Question
We are a small (250) member church an lately the Senior Pastor has been asking for the names of the top 10 givers. As head counter I do not want him to have these names.  I don't see what good it will do and it is contrary to what James tells us about showing favoritism. Should he know this?

Answer
Hello George,
Thank you for your question. I minister in England where the situation may be very different and I have no desire to cause any disharmony in a local church. I would encourage you to sit down and talk with your pastor as to why he wants this information and explain your uneasiness. Here we have a system where myself, my Associate Minister and Elders are not aware of what anyone gives unless they come to seek advice on the issue. That way there is no danger of the leadership giving too much emphasis to the opinions of those who give the most or of anyone threatening to withdraw their giving as we have no idea what effect that would have.
From my, admittedly very English, perspective I would be deeply concerned about what is being requested. However, all such issues should be discussed face to face and in a spirit of love and humility.
I agree with your understanding of James.
I hope these comments are of some help.
May God bless you
