Question
Wasn't John Smyth an Anglican priest who broke away and founded the Baptists in Holland in 1609?

Answer
Glen,
yes, Smyth was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1594 in England. Within a few years after being ordained, he broke with the Church of England because of their false doctrine and practices. He was severely persecuted and their left for Holland with others where he and his small congregation began to study the Bible and follow it teachings.   Smyth was the first English church to use the name Baptist, which meant a Bible believing doctrinally sound church.  Throughout history there have always been those who believed and followed the Bible.   One group was the AnaBaptists whom the RCC and the Protestants persecuted relentlessly. Others were the early Waldensians.
