Question
I am looking for a new church, and there is an SBC church down the street. I grew up as a "fundamentalist" in the Bob Jones University tradition, and people I talk to seem to have reservations about SBC churches, though they say many are fine. What are the issues that concern "fundamentalists" about the SBC? How can I determine if these will be issues in this particular church?

Answer
Clinton,
I apologize for being so slow. I have been extremely busy due to starting a new church in Utah. Its a long story, but we are hoping to have things worked out in a few weeks.  We are seeking to purchase property for this new church and have had a great deal of difficulty dealing with financing due the recession and government.    Thank you for your patience.
There are several things that concern Independent Fundamental Baptist in regard to SBC churches.
One is their missions program in which a local SBC church sends its money to the convention mission boards who are totally in charge of missions.   Many SBC missionaries are neo-evangelical and though they present the Gospel, much of what the do is towards social issues.
Another is the trend toward modernism which translates into having non-traditional services, contemporary music (CCM).   Here in Utah I know of only one traditional SBC church in the state.
Most IFB uphold the KJV of the Bible and most SBC use the modern versions.
The SBC colleges made an attempt about 15 years ago to move back to a conservation and biblical position in their colleges, however it did not last long.   Most SBC schools still hold to the unbiblical Amillennial position of eschatology.  It should be noted that most SBC churches are correctly Pre-Tribulationists but some are turning to the false Pre-Wrath idea.
There are some good solid SBC churches that preach God's word and are lead by godly men who know God's word and love the Lord. But it is my experience that many of them are not sound and teach a mixture of Bible and psychology.   One main problem is that SBC churches do not take a biblical stand on separation from false churches and those in doctrinal error.
I was SB for many years, but out of conviction became an IFB.
I hope this helps some.  My conviction is simply this...I believe God wants us to be doctrinally and in practice biblical and pure.  I could not remain in the SBC and hold to an uncompromising stand and God's principles.
