Baptists/Where to give tithe when "between" churches

Question
If one has made a decision to move to a new church, and is regularly visiting a new church but hasn't actually moved membership yet, is it appropriate to give tithes to the new church being visited, or should the tithes be sent back to the church being left, since membership has not been moved yet?  My expectation is that the period of time before we "officially" move our membership could be several months.

Answer
Hello Nita,
Thank you for your question. It is not easy to answer as there is obviously no biblical texts that apply and the scriptures do not deal with this specific issue. So then we have to look at basic principles of commitment. If the sudden withdrawal of your tithe from the church that you are leaving might cause any hardship then I would recommend that your tithe goes there until you officially move but tell the leadership there of your intentions so they can plan ahead. If no hardship is caused then I believe your tithe should go to the church to which you are committed. If there is a lingering doubt that you will settle properly in the new church then keep that tithe in a separate account for a short time and then give it as a lump sum gift when you feel you are able to make a full commitment.
Your desire to put God first in this matter is a good thing and I am sure as God looks at the heart whatever decision you come to He will honour.
I hope these comments are of some help.
May God bless you.
Stuart Woodward.
