Hi Dennis,
  Thank you for your question. The gift of tongues was only a valid gift in the early First Century churches and was a sign to the Jews directing unbelieving Jews to Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah, and to the Apostles' message as the genuine message of God.  Further, less that forty years after Christ returned to heaven, the sign gifts ceased because after Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed in 70 AD, Israel ceased from being a nation, the Jews were dispersed. The Kingdom, promised to Israel was postponed because Israel had rejected Jesus as their Messiah.  With Israel destroyed there was no longer any need or purpose for the sign gifts,  to be differeniated from other gifts of the Spirit, all ceased including tongues.

    During this transitional period between the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the destruction of Jerusalem, most of the New Testament was written and the gift of speaking the gospel in a unlearned foreign language was valid.  The Gospel message was being preached to the Jews.  However, with the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, the nation of Israel, and Judaism ceased to be practiced on earth because the Jews were deported from Palestine and scattered throughout the world.    All the sign gifts ceased because there was no further the need for them.  By 70 Ad the Gospel had gone to the Gentiles and with most of the New Testament was written. The earlier Christians now had the written word of God to authenticate the Gospel.
